Pickleball grip tape and overgrips: what to choose

An overgrip wraps over a base grip; a replacement grip takes the base grip’s place. Choose the correct format first, then compare texture, thickness and feel.

Overgrip or replacement grip?

These products do different jobs. An overgrip is an extra wrap over the existing grip. A replacement grip becomes the underlying handle wrap. Removing a sound base grip when fitting an overgrip changes the setup unnecessarily.

Adding another layer changes handle circumference and feel. A thin wrap still takes up space, so use the product type and thickness as well as the colour when choosing.

When a fresh wrap helps

Inspect the current grip for wear, lifting edges and a surface that no longer feels comfortable in your hand. A fresh wrap renews that contact surface. Grip preference varies between players; tackier does not automatically mean better for every hand or session.

Wrap for an even finish

  1. Identify whether the product is an overgrip or a replacement grip.
  2. Prepare the handle according to the wrap instructions.
  3. Start at the butt end and keep the overlap consistent.
  4. Work towards the top of the handle with even tension.
  5. Trim and secure the finish using the supplied method.

JOOLA explains the difference and the wrapping process in its re-gripping guide.

Explore grip tape at Equip

Our pickleball paddle grip tape has a 110 cm strip and a selection of colours. See the product details for the supplied wrap. A silicone grip band is a separate handle accessory, not a replacement for a properly finished wrap.

Build a small paddle-care kit

Keep a spare wrap with your regular equipment, dry damp kit after play and use a compatible cleaner for the paddle face. Our equipment-care guide covers the routine, and the accessories collection brings the available products together.

How often should you replace a grip?

Use its condition and feel rather than a fixed calendar. Playing frequency, storage and the wrap material all affect wear. Replace it when the surface, edges or fit no longer work well for you.
