How to choose a pickleball paddle

Compare grip, weight, dimensions and construction together. A material label or a higher price cannot tell you whether a paddle suits your hand and game.

Begin with the grip

Check the listed grip circumference and handle length, where available. If possible, try a comparable grip before buying. A handle that feels comfortable during a brief hold may feel different over a full session. Do not buy a paddle as a treatment for pain; seek individual advice if you have symptoms.

Compare the complete construction

Record face material, core, thickness, overall dimensions and weight side by side. Missing specifications should become questions to the seller. Carbon fibre, glass fibre and wood describe materials; they do not establish a universal ranking for control, spin or durability.

Check the exact option

Some listings offer a paddle with different combinations of balls and bags. The selected option determines the package. Comparing only the headline price can mean comparing a single paddle against a set.

Separate recreation from competition

A printed approval mark alone is not enough to identify a current approved model. Check the exact model and the competition’s governing requirements. Equipment approval can change; the organiser and relevant equipment database are the appropriate checks.

Make a shortlist

Choose two or three options that meet your requirements. Compare the full delivered cost and returns conditions, then ask about any missing measurements. The best shortlist is one you can explain without relying on a “pro-level” label.
