Use the current rulebook adopted by your venue or competition. Confirm the scoring format and any event-specific conditions before the first serve.
Learn the recurring situations
Ask for a demonstration of the serve, the opening bounce sequence, non-volley-zone restrictions and line calls. These situations recur often and are good starting points for a new player.
Separate a house rule from an official rule
A social group may adapt play to suit time or participation. Clarify whether an instruction is a session convention or part of the rules used for a competition.
Before entering an event
Read the event conditions, equipment requirements and format. Do not use a proposed rule-change page as evidence of an adopted rule.
